Spread the love

Aloha, and welcome to week 9!

Waimea Canyon is one of the natural wonders of Kauai. Created by centuries of volcanic eruptions, lava, and erosion, it is approximately 10 miles long and 3,000 feet deep, and nicknamed “The Grand Canyon of the Pacific.”

Getting to the canyon by car provides scenic views of Niihau, and takes you into the Kokee State Park, with other lookout points, a museum, restaurant, and cabins to rent. Pick up a map at the museum to find which hike is best for you; the trails range from easy to expert – you can take a stroll through the woods or a difficult hike into the canyon. At 3,600 feet in elevation, it creates a unique home for plant and animal life that won’t be seen elsewhere on Kauai.

Pictures of Waimea Canyon are different from day to day, depending on the weather, which can change in a space of a few minutes from sunny and warm to completely overcast and cold. It’s best to have a jacket and rain protection for your camera because you never know what the conditions will be when you get there. Stopping along the side of the road provides different angles of the canyon and Waipo`o falls. If you’ve packed water and the proper footwear, take the trail for a closer look at the falls, and if you’re lucky you might get some pictures of the wild goats as well. To get up close without the hike, try a helicopter tour to take you right to the heart of the canyon.

This picture of Waimea Canyon was taken from the side of the main road with a Nikon D750, 24mm, f4.5. Bring a variety of lenses, the scenery is diverse enough for wide angle, telephoto or prime.

If this is your first visit to the Kauai Photo Challenge, it is my way of sharing my pictures of Kauai while learning more about this beautiful island where I live. You are welcome to comment or share your own pictures.
